There is plenty of fabulous word art for sale out there in the digi world but it is really very easy to create your own. This tutorial will show you how to create word art using fonts and a quote that our font sleuth Trac Wyldman has found for us this month.Click on any of the images to see it larger in another window.
Here is the quote that I have chosen typed onto a new canvas. I think this quote is very appropriate for this time of the year when we are all thinking about our resolutions!
At this stage of the process I like to take a look at my quote and think about which particular words/phrases I would like to highlight, either by changing their size, font, style, orientation or perhaps colour. In this case I have decided to draw attention to the words "anyone" "nobody" "but" and the phrases "new ending" and "new beginning".
These words and phrases all need to be on their own separate layer so I can alter them to my hearts content without altering any other part of the quote. It is very easy to put type on a new layer because as soon as you select the type tool and click in the document a new layer is automatically created. So click in an empty area of your canvas, it doesn't matter where because we will be moving things around, and type the first word of your quote. Click on the green tick at the top of your workspace and there is your first layer done. Go ahead and break each part of your quote up into new layers in the same way. As soon as you click on your canvas again after clicking the green tick a type layer is created.
Here is my workspace after typing all of my quote broken up into layers. You will see the parts of the quote that I was leaving and not altering I have broken up into sections of three words each to enable me to move them around together.
Now I can begin changing the fonts and size of different parts of my quote. To select the type on the layer so you can alter it, double click on the large "T" for text icon that you see on the left of each layer before the "eye" icon.
I have begun with the word "Nobody" and changed the font to one of Trac' suggestions "Hajduczek" (anyone know how to pronounce that??!) and a size of 100pt.
It was at this point I decided that I wanted more room to move my quote around and that I no longer needed the layer with the whole quote typed on it, so I right-clicked on this layer and chose "delete layer".
And now I began using my move tool to move my text around the page into a pleasing arrangement.
Next I changed the words "new beginning" to Trac's found font "fine line" with a size of 60pt and moved that into place using my move tool.
And so on...I went through each layer selecting the text, and changing and moving it accordingly. The word "but" I enlarged to 48pt and made bold, the word "anyone" I changed to hajduzcek font and 100pt size, and the words "new ending" I changed to fine line font and 72pt size. The rest of the quote I left as arial font size 30pt.
And there you have it. My final step was to merge the layers. I clicked on the bottom layer of text, held down the shift key and clicked on the top layer to select them all and then chose layer, merge layers.
And finally i deleted my background layer by right clicking on it and choosing "delete layer" and then used my rectangular selection tool to select around the text and chose image, crop.
I then like to save my word art as a "png" file to maintain its transparency so that I can pop it on top of a photo, journal block etc.
And here is the final product:
Any questions/comments feel free to post on the last post of this month's Tarisota Talk and I will be happy to answer them.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial.
