Welcome to April Tarisota Talk

Cover page copy

April  already a quarter of the year has gone - It seems I say the same thing every month and it does not help when my to girls asked me today how many days till Christmas. Luckily I could put them off by explaining they needed to focus on Mother's Day!
Aprils collections have been so much fun to work with - the bright orange and aqua is definitely one of my favourite colour combination - plenty of spice. Lots to share with you so let's get right to it - but speaking of  Mothers Day we have a little give away so keep on reading.

Guest Designer: Layle Koncar

This month we welcome Layle Koncar as our Guest Designer and submit her to our usual barrage of questions.

Layle

We fell in love with Layle's space complete with chandelier! Lots more images below :)

Layle

can't live without ...music.  It's always on.

coffee or tea... coffee.  As far as I'm concerned, tea tastes like watered down dirt!  Unless it's iced tea.

perfume...I have 7 or 8 that I rotate through.  Love my perfume!

lipgloss or lipstick...lipgloss

last meal on earth ... french bread, cheese, fruit, salami, red wine

Layle

on your music play list ...too many to list!

next movie you want to see... just watched it last night - 7 Pounds.  Excellent movie!

must read blog...http://www.dooce.com/

favourite quote...'I can resist everything except temptation' - Oscar Wilde

Layle

what do you see as the next trend in scrapbooking... mixing of new with old.  With the economy the way it is, I see people figuring out how to use what they have and adding a little bit of new product in there to freshen it up.

Layle

someone you would love to scrap with ...my grandma.  Although she didn't scrapbook as we define it today, she was meticulous about keeping photo albums and labeling everything.

Layle

favourite colour combo...black and white.  those are colors, right?!

Layle

never fail technique...journaling.  Not really a technique, but I'll take it!

favorite item from the Tarisota Collection this month...the alphabet stickers.  I'm a sucker for alphabet stickers!!

Layle

Thanks Layle it's been a pleasure having you visit with us this month :)

 A Glittery Edge

By Jill

Step 1

You will need Cardstock, Glitter and Glossy Accents (or Dimensional Magic or something similar), scrap paper for placing under your project.

Project-1
Step 2

Using Glossy Accents, carefully draw pattern on cardstock.  If you prefer, you could draw pattern in pencil first as it will be covered up by the glitter!
 Project-2
Step 3

Pour a generous layer of glitter straight over your pattern.

Project-3
Step 4

Carefully pour off excess glitter onto scrap paper so it can be poured back into your glitter container.

Making a Bunny Nest

By Mel

Step 1:

Select the background chipboard circle from the Basic Grey chocolate mini album.  Curve 3 feathers around the bottom half of the chipboard circle.  Hold firmly and machine stitch the curved feathers into position.  Use two or three rows of machine stitching for this.

Tarisota 001 Tarisota 002

Step 2:

Cut a small oval out of blue felt for the bunny body.  Hand stitch on two buttons for the eyes and a cross for the mouth using 3 strands of chocolate embroidery cotton.

Tarisota 003

Step 3:

Position and adhere the bunny body above the feather nest.  Fashion and cut two aqua ears and two aqua arms out of felt as shown in the photograph.  Adhere these onto the bunny.

Tarisota 004

Step 4:

Adhere a selection of buttons onto the nest (these are the bunny eggs).  Use a strong, clear glue for this step, such as dimensional magic.

Step 5:

Add a scattering of pearl bling around the outer edge of the chipboard circle.

Tarisota 011

Hide the side edge of the chipboard circle under a piece of patterned paper when adhering onto a layout or project.  Alternatively, cut the hole punched edge off the chipboard circle.

Prompts

This month the Designers were asked what is their go to tool- can't scrap without item-

see their answers below

Jill-tool
My can't live without tool is my Tonic Scissors.  I use them all the time. They cut through absolutely everything with ease including unmounted stamps and chipboard and delicate ribbon.

Mel-tools
"The corner rounder has been a long time favourite tool of mine.  I love to include a few rounded edges on my scrapbook layouts and so far, this is one tool in my collection that has never worn out"

Gigi-toold
"a french knot here...a french knot there...a bit of backstitching just to make it special...and i'm trying to learn the chain stitch so i can do titles...
yes...absolutely...my sewing needle & embroidery threads are my favorite tools at the moment.  i find myself reaching for them each & every project.  & by the way...the fabulous ngaire made my super cute pin cushion.  it makes reaching for my sewing needles a little bit more fabulous don't you think :)"

Nic-Tools
" My favourite tool is this ratty piece of sandpaper I found on the ground outside one of the building sites my husband is working on.  It was wet but I picked it up knowing full well that the piece I had at home was worn out and that this one would dry.
I use it for sanding the edges of my photos to reveal a white edge, as well as distressing papers and embellishments".

but

"I also love my MM hole piercer and have issues if I can't find it.  I use it to pick up tricky little bits and pieces, as well as push them around on the page to where I want them.  Especially little bits and pieces such as sequins sliding around on dimensional magic!"

Ngai-tool2

"My favourite tool.. and the one I have owned the longest: my fiskars soft touch scissors. Small Light easy to use and sharp! I have used then since i started scrapping ten years ago!"

Rachel-Tool
"My favourite tool at the moment would have to be my Making Memories sanding block.  I use it all the time.  I especially like to sand the edges of my photos with it.”

Tamar-tool
"I use a combo of things - my Tarisota mouse mat, Bind it all awl  and Timeless Touches Template - for making holes in projects to make my sewing - almost straight! I love how perfectly my cross stitches turn out."

Tarisota Tissue Flowers-  by Rachel

You will need

  • The delicious pink tissue paper from your Tarisota kit
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Needle and small amount of DMC thread
  • Fluid chalk inkpad in creamy brown
  • Flower template (I have used the flower from a Maya Road chipboard keyring)

Tissue Flower Tools

Take out your tissue from your box and fold over and over to form a small rectangle

Trace the flower template and cut out the shape (holding all petals together as you go)

Take the needle and thread and make a small stitch in the centre of the flower, stitching through all layers of the tissue.  Tie off at back.

Layer by layer scrunch tissue up to centre of flower.  Leaving the outer petals more spread out.

Run the creamy brown ink pad over the flower.

Use to embellish a layout, mini album or canvas.

Rachel's Tissue Flowers

Simple steps but such a gorgeous outcome!

Flowers are not just flower... each flower is a possibility for a fabulous border, as shown by Nic.  Add a little paint for that extra pizazz.  Cut petals from flower, add to a line of adhesive and you have yourself a fabulous border.

Prompts

This month's collection focused on the rainbow of colours - Each designer chose the colour that best suited them and now shares with you some aspects of their homes.

Red - Nic Howard

Love and War:

Red is hot. It's a strong color that conjures up a range of seemingly conflicting emotions from passionate love to violence and warfare. Red is Cupid and the Devil.

Nature of Red:

A stimulant, red is the hottest of the warm colors. Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. The expression seeing red indicates anger and may stem not only from the stimulus of the color but from the natural flush (redness) of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.

Red

Yellow - Rachel Tucker

Hope and Happiness:

Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color that, like red, has conflicting symbolism. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit.

Nature of Yellow:

Yellow is one of the warm colors. Because of the high visibility of bright yellow, it is often used for hazard signs and some emergency vehicles. Yellow is cheerful.

Yellow
Pink- Gigi Kennedy

Cotton Candy and Little Girls:

Pink is a softer, less violent red. Pink is the sweet side of red. It's cotton candy and bubble gum and babies, especially little girls.

Nature of Pink:

While red stirs up passion and action, studies have shown that large amounts of pink can create physical weakness in people. Perhaps there is a tie-in between this physical reaction and the color's association with the so-called weaker sex.

Pink

Green -  Jill Geraghty- Groves

Life and Renewal:

Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment. On the flip side, green is jealousy or envy (green-eyed monster) and inexperience.

Nature of Green:

Green is a restful color with some of the same calming attributes of blue. Like blue, time moves faster in a green room.

Green

Purple - Tamar Bostock

Royalty and Spirituality:

Purple is royalty. A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. The opposites of hot red and cool blue combine to create this intriguing color.

Nature of Purple:

Purple has a special, almost sacred place in nature: lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are often delicate and considered precious. Because purple is derived from the mixing of a strong warm and strong cool color it has both warm and cool properties. A purple room can boost a child's imagination or an artist's creativity. Too much purple, like blue, could result in moodiness.

Purple copy

Orange - Ngaire Bartlam

Flamboyant and Energetic :

Orange is vibrant. It's a combination of red and yellow so it shares some common attributes with those colors. It denotes energy, warmth, and the sun. But orange has a bit less intensity or aggression than red, calmed by the cheerfulness of yellow.

Nature of Orange:

As a warm color orange is a stimulant — stimulating the emotions and even the appetite. Orange can be found in nature in the changing leaves of fall, the setting sun, and the skin and meat of citrus fruit.
Orange

Blue - Mel Goodsell

Calm and Cool :
Blue is calming. It can be strong and steadfast or light and friendly. Almost everyone likes some shade of the color blue.

Nature of Blue:
A natural color, from the blue of the sky, blue is a universal color. The cool, calming effect of blue makes time pass more quickly and it can help you sleep. Blue is a good color for bedrooms. However, too much blue could dampen spirits.

Up Close

This month's collection featured a mini book by Urban Lily -  with its little secret pull out panels it's very versatile!

Nic's Mini Book
Nic's mini book features her daughter's favourite nursery rhymes - the pictures and lyrics were found online.

Mel's Mini Book Mel created a colourful memory book for her little niece who spends time with Mel through the week.  The simple strip journalling on the brightly coloured background make this an easy album to recreate.

Tamar's Mini Book
Titled Faces I love - Tamar has used 5 x 7 photos cut down to size for each of her pages - In the pull out strips she has placed the lyrics to one of her favourite songs.

Ruby's Mini Book
Ruby has taken the time to document a friendship that started in kindergarten. She has used the pull out pages of her detailed journalling and embellished the fronts with favourite photos.

Rach's Mini Book
Rachel has stuck to a black and white theme for her mini book colour using splashes of red and lime for her accent colours.

You can see Ngai's mIni album -over in our classroom - Happy Things . A different  take again - an art journal style with a compilation of the 100 things that makes Ngaire happy.
