One of my most favourite holidays was a trip to the Hunter Valley with some dear friends a few years ago. It was just a three day weekend and we spent time on a private wine tour with our own chef who prepared a beautiful meal for us and matched it with wines. It was amazing and changed the way I thought about wines and food. While that was a particularly special experience and not one that we will be repeating regularly (although I'd dearly love to) I often catch myself reading wine reviews in the paper and in magazines and circling wines to try. So when Nuffnang offered me the chance to write a review for Gourmet Traveller Wine I was more than happy to oblige.
For a start it's such a pretty magazine with beautiful photos and the articles are a mix of writing styles - there is plenty of detail to keep a true connoisseur happy but there's also lots of everyday for someone like me.
I really enjoyed the Judgement in Paris article. A dinner hosted in Paris by Penfolds Peter Gago to showcase Australian wine. Tony Bilson was the chef and it was held in the Australian Ambassadors apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower. It provided a fascinating history of Penfolds as the diners progressed through their courses. Amazing wines and food of which I could never imagine and throughout the meal, Mick Hucknall and Jancis Robinson tweeted their experience. I just wish the writer had included
their twitter accounts in this wine magazine so I could add them to my list to follow. I already have a good list of foodies and I would love to follow some wine experts too.
I am always drawn to cool packaging and these new taste testers caught my eye called WIT ( Wine in Tube) . Ten Minutes by Tractor have just produced these 60 ml samples complete with tasting notes.
With Christmas looming and my shopping days limited I'm thinking that I can use the best buys features as my guide to sure fire hits for gifts. Starting at $15 there are recommendations to suit all budgets.
Outdoor magazines are interesting reads for those who just like a glass
or two, right through to the real wine connoisseur. I have a friend who will be getting a copy and a couple of recommended bottles for his Christmas gift this year.
