So I want to know who tried purple carrots in the last few weeks? We did a couple of times - they are yummy - Though the purple water is a bit disconcerting at first.
Hello and welcome back to Feel Better Friday - I disappeared there for a little bit with school holidays and a sneaky trip to Sydney. I hope you have still been doing well with your water and any other tidbits you have taken on.
Originally I started these posts for the 10 weeks that I had left of chemo - as you now know chemo finished for me two weeks ago early but I thought I'd keep going for the duration of the 10 weeks and see how we ended up.
My fitness pal app tells me that I have logged in for 60 days straight tracking my food and my exercise. It also has some great reports that show you whether you are meeting your goals in exercise and I am thrilled to say that I have been. If you haven't already checked it out I highly recommend the Fitness App that I mentioned at the beginning of this series. It really helps keep you accountable.
Measuring Up
Or should I say weighing it up? I have to admit I fall into a trap of looking for value for money which is great for my bank balance but I have come to realise it's not so great for my healthy eating balance.
Let's look at coffee. For an extra 50c I can upsize my coffee. The small cup starts at $3.50 so its better value to get the next size up - or even the size after that for $4 or $4.50. Even better or worse depending how you look at it, my gym membership allows me a free upgrade - yahoo... um no
Take a look at the stats on that

Now admitedly I get mine on skim so these details are a little high -but you can quickly see how many extra kjs are in those upsizes. Since I have been back on coffee (hallelujah that was a long long time lol) I have been getting the short or just a cup not a mug and I haven't missed the extra.
There was the one mug though when Talia left her ipod in the back of the cab in sydney (but I say it was totally justified ! )
If you are a Mug/upsize drinker - and you'd like to cut back your kjs a bit try dropping to a cup every second coffee - or just downsizing from Masai to Grande every second one until it feels right. No point rushing these things I say.
Let's have a look at my other favourite upsize - popcorn at the theatre - its only $1 more ( thats what my girls always say ) to go up each size - and at $6.50 for the smallest container ( eek crazy expensive ) it's very tempting to upsize.

So now we just do small and shared amongst three it's totally doable as a treat without blowing out the calories.
Snacks
As a Mumma I find it's often the kids that will be my undoing in keeping things healthy and on track. The second we hit the shops I get I'm hungry can we have a snack? lunch? It's easy to say yes and sit and have a Masai coffee with some banana bread LOL
Now I find a couple of tricks to make that not so much of a temptation.
If I definitely don't want to do the snack thing while we are out - I say before we leave - We are not stopping for snacks. - AND THEN WE DON'T that second part is crucial - cause if you say you aren't and then you do it's all downhill from there)
I take apples water and sometimes bodywise bars in my hand bag for everyone. Aggh do you know how much stuff is in my hand bag these days? Feels like I'm back with toddlers again - Remember when you had 4 different tupperware containers with snack cut up? This is no different.
If we go to the food court instead of saying what would you like - I now say would you prefer subway or sushi. No OJ or soft drink and the water bottles come out.
Afternoon tea after school is a big deal in our house. The girls are always starving by the time they get home because their lunch is quite early in the day. I have found a little plate of lots of things works best.
On hand I usually have
- Rice crackers and salsa or guacamole or houmus
- Homemade pikelets sugar free with some jam
- Whole meal Crumpets with honey
- Nuts - cashews almonds macadamia are all popular
- Ryvitas or wholemeal English muffins with peanut butter
- fruit - any - chopped up easy to eat
- Fruit Toast
- Yoghurt
- Cheese
- Home made Jelly
- Popcorn
- Meatballs
- Fried Rice
I just make up a bread and butter plate with a variety of bits on for each girl and pop it in the fridge until the bus arrives ( various times ) - I also do one for Richard ( he works from home ) and for myself and I have a cup of green tea or white tea while I listen to the chatter from the day. They get cross if I am out and haven't made it and have to put up with Daddy's afternoon tea lol.
