A month has passed since I started my Feel Better Friday post - How are you doing ? Are you starting to feel better ? Have you made any changes ? Are you reading along and thinking ? Ironically I don't feel better on Fridays - it's my yucky day but I do feel like I am making a difference in how I get through the days.
This week I have lots of things to share.
First up a new to me app put out by BUPA - The concept is around switching - you may have seen the adds on TV - switch a large ice cream for a smaller one
They have put out a free app that allows you to scan the barcode of 20,000 + products in Aussie supermarkets and it provides you with the nutritional info in a red yellow green format ( a bit like the school tuckshop) and then also gives you a whole series of alternative brands -so you can make a more informed decision on which product will work better for you.
You can read more about it here - and download it in the itunes store - Food Switch. I love it - and have been showing the girls the different results so we are all learning a bit more about what food we are choosing.
Speaking of - You may remember some time back I mention Helgas thins ?? which I love - sigh - Just got an email froma reader saying she was shocked to read they were made in the US - I checked today and yep sure looks like it - aggh I can just imagine the preservatives that would keep them fresh ..
So now I'll just stick to these for my lunch - and breakkie will go back to being bread with my eggs.
Eating Out and Food Facts
We don't eat out these days anywhere near as much as we used to - I remember the good old days before kids when we would eat out every weekend but now with children illness and the cost of living it's not so much on our agenda.
HOWEVER - coffee out is still very common- We regularly go for coffee ( or me for tea now ) as it's much more affordable and we have also readily fallen into the habit of ordering a goodie to go with. Now that I use my Fitness Pal app I'm more conscious of how much those treats add up around my tummy LOL.
Over the last month I have tried to make some better choices and here are some of the interesting food facts that I have learnt.
- A regular latte is about 200 cals in comparison to a skinny cappuccino which is only about 120 .... ( I've been converting Richard )
- A jam donut is 250 calories but a crumpet with jam is about 140 ... ( Richard again )
- An almond magnum is 369 calories - a frosty fruit is 90 ( that would be me )
MacDonalds has all their nutritional info available in store - so you can readily see what treat to have - the cupcakes are pretty good :) If you neeeeeed Banana Bread -which sometimes I do - share a piece
A great go to lunch available at most shopping centres is sushi and miso soup - I buy the rolls and bring them home and make my own miso soup- available in a packet at the supermarket in the asian section - just add boiled water and it tastes good :) This is the brand I get from woolies.
Other stores that have their nutritional info online include coffee club and grill'd.
Grill'd is one of our favourite places to go - We all get burgers and share a regular chips - and it's yummy while still being quite healthy calories, fat, sugar wise.
I am sure there are heaps more but these are the places we frequent - I'd love to hear other ideas :-)
Grey is the New Black
Last week I mentioned that I'd share why grey is the new black - but I'm not able to yet - I read a review that said as you get older (eeek ) you should consider changing your eyeliner from black to grey - it softens your eyes - As my hair is now grey and as I am missing quite a few eylashes too I thought I so have to give that a go - but I'm yet to find a grey eyeliner! I will make it my mission to find one this week and let you know how it goes - or even better has anyone else done this and do you like it ???
Late last week one of my girls had a whine about how she didn't like some sort of vege - and so I said to her well if you don't have that what will you have instead to get your five veges? She asked me what I meant. I realised then that I had never really discussed what a balanced diet should look like with either of them - They know lots about what's good and bad for you but not about the actual balance. I found this resource
So that helped facilitate the conversation and we have printed it for the fridge :)
How has your week been? Planking?? Water ??? Tried anything new ?? I have had a break from planking and running this week - haven't been feeling super and was told that I had to cut back but I have kept up my walking and strength training and increased my incline and distance for walking. With one more week of chemo to go I hope to be back on the planking train again :)
This week consider
- When you are eating out - what are you choosing ? Is there a smaller serve or a lighter version ?
- Check the nutrional info on some of your go to products - if you download the Food switch - have a look at some of your favourites that you always buy.
- Pop a poster on your fridge to bring back into reminder to eat regularly from each of the food groups.
I hope you feel better - do let me know how you are travelling I love to hear :)
